Our Story: A Better Way to Let Property

Proactive Property Management wasn't founded in a boardroom; it was born from real-world frustration. Our story begins with two partners, John Sharples and Alex Tattersall, and our Operations Manager, Stephen Tattersall.
John, a successful local businessman and landlord for many years, had grown tired of the property management industry's status quo. He was frustrated with vague fee structures, reactive maintenance that let small problems become expensive ones, and a general lack of genuine care for his investments. He knew there had to be a better way.

At the same time, Stephen was looking for a new path for his mother, Alex. After a distinguished 30-year career in a local housing association, culminating in a decade as a Serious Anti-Social Behaviour Officer, she possessed an unparalleled understanding of tenancy law and management. Stephen envisioned a company where her expertise could be used to foster positive, stable tenancies in the private sector, away from the high pressures of her previous role.

As existing business associates in construction and surveying, John and Stephen began to discuss what the "perfect" property management company would look like. They designed a service from the ground up to solve every problem they had personally experienced or witnessed.

The result is Proactive Property Management.

Meet The Team
After decades as a successful local businessman and landlord, John knew there had to be a better way to manage property. Frustrated by poor service and a lack of transparency from other agents, he decided to help build the solution. Drawing on five decades in construction and over 30 years as the founder of the highly respected ACS Surveyors, John brings a level of technical expertise and proven business acumen that is unmatched in the industry. As the owner of several successful local businesses, he knows what it takes to run a client-focused company where standards never slip. At PPM, John provides the vital strategic oversight that guides our growth, ensuring your investment is cared for with an expert eye and is in the safest possible hands.
Alex provides the deep-seated knowledge and steady hand that guides our entire lettings operation. Over a 30-year career with a local housing association, she rose through the ranks, gaining expertise in every facet of property management. Her final decade as a Serious Anti-Social Behaviour Officer equipped her with specialist skills in conflict resolution and legal compliance that are simply invaluable. Alex’s vision is to create a better, more respectful rental experience for both tenants and landlords. She oversees all tenant relations with a professional and empathetic approach that fosters long-term, stable tenancies and ensures any challenges are managed swiftly and effectively.
Stephen is the driving force behind our day-to-day operations and your primary point of contact. With a passion for property development that began at age 14, he brings a lifetime of hands-on experience to the table. As the Operations Manager for both PPM and our construction partner PB Developments, Stephen seamlessly bridges the gap between managing your property and physically caring for it. His unique combination of a 1st Class Law Degree and his background as a qualified plumber means he is equally adept at navigating complex contracts and overseeing a high-quality refurbishment. From leading our unique in-person tenant vetting to managing all maintenance, Stephen's multifaceted expertise ensures every aspect of your property is managed proactively, efficiently, and to the highest possible standard.
We believe in nurturing the next generation of property professionals, and Alex is a perfect example. His relationship with the team started during a school work experience placement with John Sharples, who quickly recognised his potential and has been nurturing his business and surveying skills ever since. While continuing his Surveying degree at university, Alex is responsible for conducting our thorough property inspections. The trust we place in him is a testament to his diligence and keen understanding of property standards. He is an essential part of ensuring our proactive promise is delivered, providing landlords with detailed and reliable assessments of their valuable assets.
George brings a fantastic energy and eagerness to learn to the Proactive Property Management team. As a full-time apprentice working directly under John Sharples, he is immersed daily in the best practices of property surveying and inspection. George supports our operational team by assisting with property assessments and helping to compile detailed reports for our landlords. His role is a testament to our belief in hands-on training and building expertise from the ground up, ensuring our proactive and thorough approach is embedded throughout the company.
